Brewski (named after the sudsy beverage), like his “sister” Bogey, came from the same Good Dog Rescue. His backstory is that his “momma” dog got picked up as a stray at a Mississippi Truck Stop, 2 days before he was born! So he started his life out “homeless”. That is, until our wonderful owners saw his big brown eyes and said yes and adopted him!
I met Brewski at the same time I met his housemate, Bogey – when hired by their owner in Dartmouth MA after Bogey had exhibited increasing Aggression with Level 4 Bites (Dunbar Scale) to both Brewski and Biscuit. Brewski at the time was quite timid and seeming to be lacking in self-confidence. His relationship with Bogey was certainly not helping the matter either!
Over the years, we were fortunate enough to have Brewski board with us somewhat frequently as his owners enjoy time away. I noticed something very extraordinary right from the first time I saw Brewski out with other dogs. It was something very special that I had not seen too often, if at all. It was as if Brewski somehow knew exactly how to “handle” each dog that approached him. He would immediately adjust his energy to be in “sync” with that particular dog. If the dog needed him to be calm, he would be calm. If the dog was over-stepping his bounds…this scrawny, skinny little boy had just the right “words” to deter that dog. It was like he had been a dog before and just knew exactly what to do in any context….and I don’t believe in that kind of stuff…but this was, and has been ever since, tough to explain.
That was all well and good, but he did suffer in one place – his confidence with strangers. As good as Brewski was with other dogs, and believe me when I tell you – he’s one of the very best – he could be quite skittish around strangers and in strange environments. So, last year, we had the opportunity to help him with our Advanced Manners Program focusing in Public Exposure Training (PET) and the time I was able to spend with him just further reinforced my ultimate request of him.
