Some History About Us

After many years of study and observation we have learned that nobody teaches a dog about behavior better than another dog!

How it all started....

Canine Behavioral Services Inc. was founded in 1996, in Sarasota FL. by an entrepreneurial young man named Brian Manning, at the age of 26.

Over the past 20+ years, Brian has held almost every position there is in the Pet Services field including Kennel Worker, Animal Rescue Agent, Veterinary Technician, Shelter Adoption Supervisor, Trainer’s Assistant and now, Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA). In his career, Brian has helped thousands of dogs and their owners find balance in their relationship through education, training and effective communication.

The 3 C’s – By becoming our dog’s Calm, Confident & Consistent Leader, we can help to alleviate, and avoid the development of, many unwanted behaviors and channel excessive energy into a positive and productive relationship.

The Facts: The actual number of dogs euthanized each year in the United States is staggering. According to the most recent statistical information provided by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the American Pet Products Association (APPA), in 2015-2016 there were approximately 77.8 million pet dogs in the United States.

That’s an increase of over 4 million dogs in the last 12 years. Studies estimate that up to 4 million dogs are surrendered to animal shelters or humane organizations every year. Of those up to 4,000,000 unwanted dogs, approximately 35% are euthanized. That potentially means that over 1,200,000 (one million two hundred thousand!) dogs are euthanized in this country every year.

We believe that percentage to be much, much higher.

Up until the past few years, the only readily available option for dogs with unwanted behaviors was to either be surrendered to a shelter or to go through Obedience Training. After years of Obedience Training dogs for clients, I began to see clearly that Obedience Training will not necessarily “fix” behavior problems!

Just because a dog learns how to Sit or Stay, this by no means guaranteed a future of behavioral balance.

While continuing my education and training, the focus of my study began to change from Obedience Training dogs for people…..to “People Training” for dogs. It has since become my sole mission to help human owners to fully understand and effectively communicate with their dogs.

My name is Brian Manning. I am the Lead Behavior Consultant, Certified Professional Dog Trainer and owner of Canine Behavioral Services Inc.

It was more than 20 years ago when I had the unfortunate task of “disposing” of many of these so-called “problem” dogs.

Let me explain.

Early in my career, I worked at the Animal Rescue League of Boston and one of my many shelter duties was that of Euthanasia Technician. In order to effectively accomplish my “duties”, I was forced to become hardened to this heart-wrenching epidemic, but all the while knowing that my goal in life was to somehow make a difference in these seemingly absurd numbers of unwanted dogs.

I began immersing myself in study, attending seminars & lectures, reading behavioral journals and honing my techniques on the shelter dogs as well as my own growing “pack” of rescued dogs. I was also inspired by many of the Professional Dog Trainers I met along the way including Ian Dunbar, Brian Kilcommons, Gail Fisher, Victoria Stilwell and yes, Cesar Millan as well.

Fast forward to September 2006 – Canine Behavioral Services Inc. not only became incorporated in the state of Rhode Island, but it was then that I began my quest to build a Pack of balanced dogs which has enabled me to have the ability to help dogs like no other trainer can!

Each year since, our business has experienced a significant increase in dogs & owners served over the previous year.  In the past year of 2017, we reached a new high and had busiest year since our incorporation! I would guess that means we must be doing something right!

In January 2010 – I experienced the greatest event in my life to date  – the birth of my daughter, and youngest Packleader, Morgan Simone Manning.  I feel I have been blessed in life and have devoted the remainder of my time here on earth to raising a loving, responsible child while helping dogs and owners to find peace, harmony and balance in their lives and relationships with each other!
