Hi Brian!
I wanted to reach out and thank you again for the work that you did with Emma as well as the lessons you taught me during our at-home sessions. Earlier today I was put in a situation that could have gone very poorly if I hadn’t ‘changed’ my approach to dog handling.
On our mid-day walk, I noticed an older woman that appeared to have fallen and was struggling to get back up in the middle of a relatively quiet street with a larger dog laying down near her. I approached her with Emma by my side and offered help.
As we got within 10 feet of her, her pitbull got up and came after Emma starting a fight.
Luckily because of Emma’s work with you, I felt comfortable dropping her leash and grabbing the pitbull by its harness.
Even though the dog repeatedly made efforts to go after Emma, she stayed back and mostly ignored the aggressive behavior.
I was then able to help the older woman to her feet and get her back to her house.
In a relatively high-stress encounter, it was a relief to not worry about how Emma may or may not react. Without holding Emma’s leash and still controlling the pitbull by its harness, Emma could not have behaved better.
She stayed close and followed behind us while also maintaining a safe distance between herself and the pitbull as to not re-instigate a fight.
